With a record 28 straight quality starts at home, the St. Louis Cardinals hoped to ride Adam Wainwright to a victory against the Cincinnati Reds. Wainwright struggled early (as did the Cardinals defense) as the Reds jumped out to an early 3-0 lead.
The Atlanta Braves stayed atop the National League East as they defeated the NY Mets 9-3. The Braves received a solid pitching performance from Jair Jurrjens, as he allowed three runs on six hits through 5.2 innings while striking out eight (though he did walk six).
Kevin Slowey of the Minnesota Twins was skipped in his last start due to tendonitis and made his first start in 10 days on Sunday. He dominated the Oakland A’s as he pitched 7 no-hit innings. However due to concerns over his arm and the need for him to hopefully pitch into the playoffs, Twins manager Ron Gardenhire pulled Slowey after 7 innings and went to the bullpen.
With full pitcher and catcher workouts set to begin, there has been some discouraging news from some camps. First came the news that Cliff Lee underwent foot surgery last week.
