Evan Longoria – 3rd Base Tampa Bay Rays
Three time All Star, Evan Michael Longoria was born October 7th 1985, in Downey California. Longoria starred in the Cape Cod League in 2005, in the Big West League in 2006 and at Long Beach State before he was drafted by Tampa Bay in 2006. He was labeled the “best pure hitter” in the 2006 draft and received a handsome $3 million signing bonus.
On April 12, 2008, Longoria was called up from Triple A Durham to replace disabled Willy Aybar. On April 14th, he belted his first homerun against the New York Yankees. On April 18th 2008, Tampa Bay signed Longoria to a six year contract at $17.5 million with options through 2016 that make the contract worth $44 million. Longoria has been selected to All Star game every year he has been in the league.
Since his arrival in Tampa, Longoria has solidified the third base position, added patience, power and finesse to the lineup and become the face of the franchise. He was named Rookie of The Year in 2008 and won a Gold Glove in 2009.
Longoria is also regarded as a smart base runner who is stealing more bases each year and who understands Manager Joe Madden’s first to third offense. His 2010 numbers have suffered due to the absence of a consistent performer in the clean-up spot. Longoria bats third behind Carl Crawford. The twosome spells trouble for every pitcher. If Tampa is to go all the way in 2010, Longoria will have to lead the Rays, a role that has become comfortable for the 6’2”, 180 pound Californian. Maddon has asked Longoria to wear many hats and Evan has come through as the leader of the franchise.
