Big Weekend for Mets – Yankees

Alex Rodriquez hit his 563rd homerun, tying the slugger with Reggie Jackson for 11th place on the all-time list

Two good, high-priced teams will be in New York this weekend as the New York Mets host the New York Yankees at Citi Field starting on Friday night. Both teams won Thursday night to tighten their respective races. Laden with injuries and the usual controversies that accompany both teams, the weekend series has big pennant race potential for the Big Apple’s finest.

In Atlanta, the Yankees finally got plenty of hitting and run production from the cleanup slot in an 11-7 win over the Braves. Alex Rodriquez hit his 563rd homerun, tying the slugger with Reggie Jackson for 11th place on the all-time list.

The Atlanta win was A-Rod’s first multi-hit game since May 25th. His 3 for 5, one homerun and 4 RBI night brought some relief to a troubled clubhouse and manager. In a rare road appearance, General Manager Brian Cashman paid a road visit to the Bronx Bombers who have lost 9 of their last 11 and relinquished the league lead to the dreaded Bosox.

With their talented slugger mired in a .223 slump, the Yanks have struggled for hits much less runs. A-Rod’s slump has been so pronounced that Braves Manager Bobby Cox did the unthinkable walking Mark Teixeira to load the bases for the struggling third baseman. A-Rod used an inside out swing to plate two runs with a clutch single.

Speculation has been that his strike zone is extended and that he has not fully recovered from hip surgery. Yankee fans have short memories and when you are the cleanup hitter for the highest profile team in the sport, you had better produce.

The Yankees’ most consistent starter, Andy Pettitte only lasted 3.2 innings yielding 7 hits and 6 runs before giving way to Alfredo Aceves who went 2.1 innings recording his 5th win against one loss. Mariano Rivera posted his 17th save retiring the last batter.

Resurgent left fielder Johnny Damon also drive in 4 runs with another solid 4 – 5 night at the plate. Damon raised his average to .293 and has been the most consistent Yankee batsman to date.

Mets 3, Cards 2

The Mets won the game 3-2. AP Photo/Paul J. Bereswill)Two of the game’s best pitchers, both Cy Young winners, went at it on Thursday with the Mets Johan Santana (9-5) out-dueling Chris Carpenter (5-2) and giving the Mets consecutive wins for the first time in 16 days.

With Carlos Beltran, Jose Reyes and Carlos Delgado out with injuries, the Mets’ lineup has some serious holes. Disabled pitchers John Maine and Oliver Perez has pushed the bullpen the brink.

Double A callup, Nick Evans delivered a clutch two run shot in the three run third. With help from Pedro Feliciano, who pitched the eighth and closer Francisco Rodriquez, who notched his 20th save, the Mets pulled within a half game of the Phillies in the NL East. What weekend!

Baseball’s Morning Report

26 Jun 2009 by Hiland in American League

The American league East Reigns

Major League Baseball’s best division, The AL East, continues its mastery of the National League and paved the way to the American League’s 10 wins Wednesday night. It was “Happy Days are Here Again” for the AL and especially for the American League East with four of the division’s five teams registering decisive wins before the big crowds that follow the division wherever they travel.

Red Sox 3, Nationals 2

american-league

Nationals Park has 41, 530 fans there but the majority were rooting for the league leading Red Sox (44-27) as the visitors rode a three run home run by David Ortiz and a 2 run shot by Jason Varitek to outscore Washington 6-4.

John Lester recorded the win and Jonathon Papelbon recorded his 17th save.

Ortiz flagged a 2 out changeup with 2 on in the fourth to ignite the Red Sox offense. The Bosox now lead the AL East by 5 games.

Yankees 4, Braves 2

The Yankees (39-32) ended a string of 14 scoreless innings after Manager Joe Girardi was tossed from the game when rookie catcher Francesco Cervelli hit his first major league homerun in the sixth inning. The slumping A Rod (.210) finally got a clutch hit, smashing an 0-2 pitch from Kris Medlen (2-3) in to right center and plating 2 runs.

Jaba Chamberlain pitch 6.1 strong innings, striking out 5 and walking nine in recording his 4th win (402). All Star reliever Mariano Rivera notched his 16 save to seal the win. In a rare appearance at the plate, Rivera lined out in the 9th.

yankees

Blue Jays 8, Reds 2

Toronto (40-33) took the mystery out of this early as Aaron Hill, Adam Lind and Vernon Wells all homered in the first inning off shell-shocked Bronson Arroyo. It was Toronto’s third straight win.

Scott Richmond recorded his 6th win for the homestanding Jays.

Rays 7 – Phillies 1

In another faceoff between last year’s league winners, the homestanding Rays (38-35) chalked up a 5-run 8th inning to boost Matt Garza (5-5) past the Champion Phillies.

Ex-Phillie slugger Pat Burrell got Tampa started with a 2 run shot in the second and Quniton McCracken extend his 18 game hitting streak with an RBI single in the 8th.

Marlins 5, Orioles 2

On a hot night in Miami, Ricky Nolasco continued to show winning form after two weeks in the minors with his 4th consecutive strong outing. The Marlins have now won four straight and have handed the Orioles (32-39) their second loss following a five game winning streak.

Nolasco only surrendered tow unearned runs. Dan Meyer notched his first save in relief. Cody Ross had three hits for Miami.

LA Brother vs. LA Brother

24 Jun 2009 by Hiland in MLB 2009

jeff-weaverFor the 21st time in Major League baseball history two brothers squared off in a high profile West Coast intra-league pitching match up. With their parents in the crowd the National League’s Los Angeles Dodger substitute starter Jeff Weaver (4-1) squared away against his cross-town rival Los Angeles Angel pitcher Jared Weaver (7-3). The siblings’ anxious parents sat in the crowded stadium adorned in jerseys that were half Angel, half Dodger uniforms sewn together.

The brotherly pairing is baseball’s first since 2002. It can now be said that the older brother has the edge in these contests. The elder brother has now won 12 times as the league leading Dodgers improved the best record in baseball with a 6-4 triumph.

The game was significant for both teams. The Angels had been riding an eight game winning streak and have pulled themselves to within a half game of American League West Leader the Texas Rangers, who lost in 11 innings to the San Francisco Giants. Had the younger, 26 year old Jared, been able to defeat his older brother 32 year old Jeff, the Angels would have moved into sole possession of first place.

Journeyman Jeff, continued his resurgences and lifted the Dodgers to another impressive win. Sporting the game’s best record at 45-24, the Dodgers lead the National league West by 8 games.

The Dodger season is a credit to a total team effort; the game’s best all around defense, clutch hitting by the full lineup, solid starting pitching and tremendous relief pitching. Saturday night’s victory displayed all of the above ingredients as the visiting Dodgers improved their intra-league record to 6-5.

Gail Weaver, mother of the rival pitchers and close brothers, summed up her emotionally charged evening; “We were hoping somehow that they can both get a win, but we know that isn’t possible, so you just keep rooting for them both and whatever happens, happens. They both deserve this because they both work so very hard.”

On the strength of a Kendry Morales homerun and an errant pickoff attempt by Jeff, the Angels jumped out to an early 2-0 lead. As they have done all season, the Manny-less Dodgers answered with Russell Martin’s first homerun of the season, a clutch two run triple by Andre Ethier, an RBI single by Casey Blake and a sacrifice fly by Orlando Hudson aka O-Dog.

Manager Joe Torre praised his winning pitcher but had high praise for his bullpen stars, Ronald Bellisario (4 strikeouts) and Ramon Troncoso (four up – four down).

The Dodgers and Angels square away again on Sunday night in ESPN’s featured game. Enjoy the game and Happy Father’s Day!

A-Rod Sits Out!

24 Jun 2009 by Hiland in Alex Rodriguez

alex-rodriquez

Alex Rodriquez, suffering from fatigue, went on the bench for few days

The biggest star on the game’s highest profile team is on the bench. Alex Rodriquez, A-Rod, walked into manager Joe Girardi’s office and declared fatigue as a reason to rest on the bench for a few days. With 100 family and personal guests in the stands, the locals were disappointed.

In the wake of the worst batting slump of his career, Yankee pilot Girardi may have considered the move a blessing. A-Rod is in the midst of an 0-15 slump and is batting a measly .212. These are not zillionaire numbers, not all-star numbers and are numbers that would have had lesser players on the bench weeks ago.

In his defense, the Yankee third baseman and cleanup hitter has returned from early season hip surgery. He cited the extra rehabilitation workouts as cause for the fatigue. His batting coach, Kevin Long, indicated that in his eagerness to make contact, Rodriquez has been “reaching” for pitches.

Girardi added; “We just felt that he needs a couple days physically. Is he sore? No, he’s not sore. But, we think he’s a little bit run down and he could recharge his batteries.” Perhaps, A-Rod was summoned into the office rather than volunteered.

In his absence, the Yankees rode Andy Pettite’s strong seven inning pitching to cruise to an easy 5-1 win over the home standing Florida Marlins. A-Rod’s replacement, Angel Berroa, played flawlessly in the field and had a clutch RBI double. In addition to his batting woes, Rodriquez’s defense has also come under recent scrutiny.

With the win, the up-and-down Yankees moved within two games of first place Boston.

In a solid performance from all the Yankees, Pettite received the loudest accolades. The left-hander lowered his ERA to a miniscule 2.35 in another masterful performance. Pettite seemed most proud of his RBI double.

Catcher Jorge Posada and left fielder Johnny Damon also drove in runs.

Tonight’s matchup pits former Marlin A.J Burnett (5-3) against hard-throwing Josh Johnson (6-1). Burnett has had control issues of late and looks to get himself back in form. Johnson has used a dominating fastball to surprise for the Marlins.

In an oddity, there seemed as many Yankee fans as Marlin fans at the game. Miami sports many NY retirees and they show up when the New York teams come to town. This quirk bears testimony to the Yankees status as America’s Baseball Team.

The Morning Report 06-24-09

24 Jun 2009 by Hiland in MLB 2009

Interleague scoreboard AL – 7 – NL – 7

zack-greinkeCards – 3, Mets – 0

Many of the aces in both leagues were out in force on Tuesday night. For the most part, they lived up to their salaries. Thanks to the strong play of the National League West, who won 4 of their 5 interleague games, when the last pitch was thrown out west, the league had split the 14 games. In an oddity, 3 of the 4 NL West wins came on AL soil.

But when it was all said and done, Tuesday night was about pitching, pitching and more pitching. The best pitching performance went to St. Louis Cardinal right-hander Joel Pineiro. The 6 foot 8 inch, 9-year veteran dominated the decimated Mets with a complete game 2 hit blanking that raised his record to 6-8.

Pineiro issued one walk and struck out one in lowering his ERA to 3.40. It was Pineiro’s first shutout of the year.

Royals 2, Astros –1

Kansas City ace Zack Greinke recorded his 9th win (9-3) and lowered his league leading ERA to an astounding 1.90 with eight innings of eight hit ball. He offered no walks and struck out five with 107 pitches. Every time this guy goes out, the Royals can beta any team in the game.

Giants – 4, A’s – 1

The Giants 650,000 man and Cy Young winner Tim Linecum tossed another complete game gem, giving up 7 hits, walking 2 and striking out 12 for his 7th win with 108 pitches.

The free-swinging Giants made the most of their 4 hits. Despite their weak hitting, the Giants keep on winning and reigning in the front running Dodgers.

Red Sox – 11, Nats – 3

The Red Sox used 5 pitchers to land the Nationals. Brad Penny gave up three in 5.2 innings but as usual the Sox got timely hitting. Ellsbury went 4-4 and Jason Bay went 4-6. The Sox hitting moved them one more game ahead of the struggling Yankee batsman.

Braves – 4, Yankees – 0

A-Rod needs a demotion. The 3rd basemen’s measly .209 batting average has him mired in the longest slump of his career and gives the Yankees a hole in the middle. The slugger will find himself, but perhaps it will be from the six or seven slot.

Tommy Hanson moved to 3-0 with 5.2 innings of 4 hit shutout ball. Chien-Ming Wang dropped to 0-6 with an 11.62 ERA but showed signs of a mending sinker. How long will Manager Girardi stay with his struggling number three?

Dodgers – 5, White Sox – 2

The Dodgers notched their 47th win behind Hiroki Kuroda’s first win since opening day. The ailing Kuroda was sharp with good velocity, a sharp slider and total command.

The only right-hander in a stable of left handed starters, Kuroda struck out nine and walked none in 8.2 innings. Dodger closer notched his 18th save.

Phillies – 10, Rays – 1

In a rematch of last year’s World Series teams, Jamie Moyer pitched 6 impressive innings to lead the Phillies over the struggling Rays. The Phillies continue their outstanding road play as Utley and Mayberry each belted homeruns.

Rockies Road Smooth!

23 Jun 2009 by Hiland in MLB 2009

colorado-rockiesThe Colorado Rockies are on a roll! Combining better-than-expected pitching with timely hitting, the Colorado Rockies have now won 17 of their last 18 games. Currently, the Rockies are on a six-game winning streak.

Nobody is hotter in Major League Baseball. The Rockies have clawed their way back to the National league West pennant race and have boosted their stock along the way. Monday night’s game in Anaheim drew 39,557 fans, many curious to see exactly what this team brings to the plate.

They left with a good sampling, as the home-standing Angels continue to find the NL West are not the patsies originally described. On Monday, the Rockies brought out their 7 game winner, veteran Aaron Cook, who has won 59 games since joining the Colorado franchise.

It was a typical performance for Cook. He challenged hitters in his seven innings of three hit, two walk, one run pitching. Cook has nearly perfected his sinker. The Rockies recorded 13 ground ball outs in Cook’s stint.

In his post game interview, Manager Jim Tracy applauded his lead pitcher, “It was quite a statement from Aaron. I think there is more top come from him, though, as he moves on through the course of his career.”

The development of the sinker has Cook looking like an All Star and like a pitcher with a future similar to Derek Lowe of the Braves. He gives the Rockies plenty of innings and keeps his defense in the game.

On Monday Cook was in charge from the outset. Seth Smith’s two run single and Ian Stewart’s RBI single gave the Rockies an early second inning lead they would not relinquish in the 11-1 victory.

Brad Hawpe added a thunderous insult to injury with a three-run homerun to straightaway center field in the fifth. That was it for ace Angel, Matt Palmer, whose perfect 6-0 start now has blemish.

The LA pitching problems continued as the pitchers were guilty of six wild pitches setting a new and dubious club record. Angels Manager Mike Scioscia paid tribute to the resurgence of the Rockies.

“They way they played tonight, we saw firsthand the way they’ve been playing the last few weeks. Their hitters were very disciplined. They made Matt get in the zone and when he did, they were ready for him.”

The Angels who just lost a series to the LA Dodgers must be wondering what is going ion in the NL West. The Rockies and the Dodgers are two of the most patient hitting teams in baseball. And, it is working. By forcing pitchers to throw more pitches and throw strikes for pitches, they are going deep into counts and getting pitches they can drive. The Angels, long known as a free swinging team, just might want to try it.

Pujols & LaRussa Hit Strides

22 Jun 2009 by Hiland in MLB 2009

albert-pujolsThe St. Louis Cardinals retained their National League Central 1.5 game lead over the persistent Milwaukee Brewers with a weekend sweep of the Kansas City Royals. Sunday’s rout marked Manager Tony LaRussa’s landmark 2500th win and marked another spectacular hitting display by the game’s best batsman, Albert Pujols.

The 12-5 win at Kaufman Stadium in Kansas City put LaRussa in some pretty exclusive company. The savvy manager joins legends Connie Mack and John McGraw as the only managers to win 2500 games or more. His 2500-2177 won-lost record trails Mack (3731-3948) but leaves him just 263 games behind McGraw (2763-1948). The way the Cardinals are playing, LaRussa could pass McGraw in two more years.

And, the way the Cardinals are winning is very connected to the way their superstar Pujols is hitting. The way Pujols is hitting puts him on track to have another remarkable season. Hitting .329 with 68 RBI’s and 26 homeruns, the perennial all-star first baseman is building a signature year for an already impressive resume. In baseball today, there is no better batsman.

The Cardinals do not typify 21st century baseball. Their pitching staff is mediocre, the relief pitching adequate and if Pujols were not in the lineup, they would not feature one .300 hitter. Yes, LaRussa is an outstanding manager and every game he is challenged to out-strategize managers with superior pitching and superior overall hitting. However, Pujols makes up for a lot of deficiencies.

On Sunday, Pujols went 4-5, hit two homeruns and with the help of his 3rd grand slam this year, drove in six runs. Amazing, truly amazing!

Pujols has family and friends in the Kansas City area. The Royals may want to consider relocating them. In his career, Pujols has hit 12 homeruns in 27 Kaufman Stadium games. This weekend he swatted three homeruns and drove in 10 runs.

Pujols has now hit 9 career grand slams, tying him with the legendary Stan Musial for the franchise record. As LaRussa said, “He does it over and over again. And, it’s just impossible to describe how great he is. But, when he does something like this, this is really great. It was the difference. His production is the difference in the game.”

The Cardinals were actually trailing the improved Royals 3-4 entering the decisive 4th inning. The Cardinals sent 13 men to the plate. With the bases loaded, Pujols uncorked an astonishing blast that struck the windows in the Royals Hall of Fame Building in left field 423 feet away. Game over!

For good measure, Pujols belted a solo blast in the fifth. C’mon. Are you kidding?
