Interleague scoreboard AL – 7 – NL – 7
Cards – 3, Mets – 0
Many of the aces in both leagues were out in force on Tuesday night. For the most part, they lived up to their salaries. Thanks to the strong play of the National League West, who won 4 of their 5 interleague games, when the last pitch was thrown out west, the league had split the 14 games. In an oddity, 3 of the 4 NL West wins came on AL soil.
But when it was all said and done, Tuesday night was about pitching, pitching and more pitching. The best pitching performance went to St. Louis Cardinal right-hander Joel Pineiro. The 6 foot 8 inch, 9-year veteran dominated the decimated Mets with a complete game 2 hit blanking that raised his record to 6-8.
Pineiro issued one walk and struck out one in lowering his ERA to 3.40. It was Pineiro’s first shutout of the year.
Royals 2, Astros –1
Kansas City ace Zack Greinke recorded his 9th win (9-3) and lowered his league leading ERA to an astounding 1.90 with eight innings of eight hit ball. He offered no walks and struck out five with 107 pitches. Every time this guy goes out, the Royals can beta any team in the game.
Giants – 4, A’s – 1
The Giants 650,000 man and Cy Young winner Tim Linecum tossed another complete game gem, giving up 7 hits, walking 2 and striking out 12 for his 7th win with 108 pitches.
The free-swinging Giants made the most of their 4 hits. Despite their weak hitting, the Giants keep on winning and reigning in the front running Dodgers.
Red Sox – 11, Nats – 3
The Red Sox used 5 pitchers to land the Nationals. Brad Penny gave up three in 5.2 innings but as usual the Sox got timely hitting. Ellsbury went 4-4 and Jason Bay went 4-6. The Sox hitting moved them one more game ahead of the struggling Yankee batsman.
Braves – 4, Yankees – 0
A-Rod needs a demotion. The 3rd basemen’s measly .209 batting average has him mired in the longest slump of his career and gives the Yankees a hole in the middle. The slugger will find himself, but perhaps it will be from the six or seven slot.
Tommy Hanson moved to 3-0 with 5.2 innings of 4 hit shutout ball. Chien-Ming Wang dropped to 0-6 with an 11.62 ERA but showed signs of a mending sinker. How long will Manager Girardi stay with his struggling number three?
Dodgers – 5, White Sox – 2
The Dodgers notched their 47th win behind Hiroki Kuroda’s first win since opening day. The ailing Kuroda was sharp with good velocity, a sharp slider and total command.
The only right-hander in a stable of left handed starters, Kuroda struck out nine and walked none in 8.2 innings. Dodger closer notched his 18th save.
Phillies – 10, Rays – 1
In a rematch of last year’s World Series teams, Jamie Moyer pitched 6 impressive innings to lead the Phillies over the struggling Rays. The Phillies continue their outstanding road play as Utley and Mayberry each belted homeruns.
